Description route:
The tufa in Lingenau is one of the most impressive natural phenomena in Vorarlberg. This short hike lets you see rocks being formed in near real time. But what is this spring tuff anyway? The term tuff is actually wrong from a geological point of view. Tuff is rock formed from solidified volcanic ash. When the Romans around 15 B.C. conquered Vorarlberg, they also came to the Bregenzerwald. The strange rock they found here reminded them of the rocks in their homeland in southern Italy and they named it after this tuff rock. But how does this swelling tuff really come about?
